Wat Phra Singh (Full name: Wat Phra Singh Woramahaviharn) was built in the fourteenth century by King Phayu and was originally called Wat Li Chiang Phra. The buildings that can be seen here today are from the 1800s and have been recently restored.

The temple is famed for housing a revered Buddha image (Phra Phutthasihing) which plays a central role in the city’s annual Songkran celebrations (13th to 15th April). People come to the temple to bathe the Buddha image and make merit.

Aside from this, a number of important ceremonies also take place at the temple and Chiang Mai’s chief abbot also lives here. The temple houses some wonderful examples of Lanna art including wooden carvings and a variety of murals showing life as it was in the Lanna Kingdom.
